GULF SPRINGS, AL - The UB men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring break trip south with a big win Friday morning, beating Illinois State 6-1 in a neutral site match on the campus of Alabama State. The victory improves their overall record to 9-4, and matches its win total from all of the 2012-13 dual season.
The Bulls took the doubles point convincingly, with wins at second and third to take an early 1-0 lead. Sergio Arevalillo and Jonathan Hannestad clinched it with an 8-7 win, and Sebastian Ionescu and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik took their match 8-5.
In singles play, the team swept the top four singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match quickly. Damien David earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at number one, Ionescu won 7-5, 6-3 at two, and freshman Jonathan Hannestad would take an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory. Illinois State would take fifth singles, but Shkodnik would close out the day with an exciting win at sixth singles.
Stepping into the lineup due to an injury to Pablo Alvarez, the senior would lose a tough first set 7-6 before storming back with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the third set super tiebreaker, he would dominate with a 10-4 win to clinch his second straight singles win.
The team will enjoy the rest of its break and will use a nine-day break to prepare for the start of the Mid-American Conference season. The win closes out a five week road trip that covered six states where the team went 5-3. The conference season begins next Sunday, March 23, with the Toledo Rockets coming to Miller Tennis Center for a 1 pm match.
