CLEARWATER, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team received some solid work in the circle, splitting its action on Saturday. The Bulls shut out Iona, 2-0, in the first game and then fell to Rutgers, 4-1, in the night cap. UB is now 11-9 on the season.
"Our pitchers threw great today," said head coach Trena Peel. "We sung the bats well in the first game, but we have to continue to do the little things right to win consistently."
Buffalo 2, Iona 0
UB got another outstanding pitching performance from senior Tori Speckman, who struck out 12 batters for the second straight day as she pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits. The Bulls scored both of their runs in the top of the first, using a leadoff double from junior Alexis Curtiss. The Bulls put two in scoring position with two outs as senior Holly Luciano drove in a pair with a single.
Speckman ended up striking out eight of the first nine batters as she allowed single hits in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. Curtiss finished with two of the five hits recorded by the Bulls. In addition to Luciano's singles, the Bulls also picked up hits from Karly Nevez and Hayley Barrow.
Rutgers 4, Buffalo 1
The Bulls and Scarlet Knights each recorded five hits on the afternoon, but Rutgers was able to score four runs, beginning with one in the top of the first and three more in the top of the fifth against UB starter Nicole Aviles. Only two of the runs were earned as the final two runs of the inning came on an error from Buffalo second baseman, Sammi Gallardo.
The Bulls got a solid final two innings in the circle from Barrow, who made her pitching debut. She went on to strike out her first five batters, retiring all six that she saw. UB scored its lone run in the sixth inning as Nevez hit a leadoff infield single and scored on a double to left field from Gallardo.
Gallardo went on to record two of UB's five hits, while Curtiss, Nevez, and Barrow had the other three.
The Bulls continue action tomorrow morning when they face Maine at 9:00 am.
