BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo, the State University of New York wrestler Nate Rose closed out his impressive week at the World Wrestling Championships with a 1-1 record. The freshman became the first wrestler in UB history to qualify for the World Championships as he represented his home country of Trinidad and Tobago.
"It was a great experience for Nate competing against the best wrestlers in the world," said head coach John Stutzman. "I thought that he competed hard and he put himself in position to win in both of his matches. The whole experience was great for his development and we are really excited about his future as well as the future of this program."
Rose came out aggressive in his opening match against Aurelio Valdez Chairez of Mexico and completely dominated, winning by 10-0 technical fall. The freshman was all over the experienced grappler from Mexico and turned in a great opening round victory.
In his second match of the afternoon, Rose fought hard but Turkey's Ibrahim Bolukbasi was too much for the Bronx, NY native, handing him the loss. Bolukbasi lost his next match, eliminating Rose from moving on in the tournament.
Finishing 1-1 at the World Championships in his first-ever trip may not be enough for the young 197-pounder, but the experience and training he was able to receive from the trip will only elevate him to the next level for the Bulls this upcoming season.
