Baseball Shutout By Davidson On Saturday, 5-0

DAVIDSON, NC – The University at Buffalo baseball team dropped their second straight game to open the season on Saturday afternoon on the road against Davidson at Wilson Field, 5-0. The Bulls left nine runners on base while striking out six times at the dish in the loss.
The Bulls had a great chance to open the game up in the first inning but they weren't able to score with the bases loaded. Ben Haefner earned a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before Bobby Sheppard smacked a single to left field to move Haefner to third with one out. After a strikeout, Sheppard earned his first stole base of the season and then Chris Kwitzer walked to load the bases. Andrew Taft dug in for the first time in his career with the bases loaded and flied out to center field, ending the threat.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Lee Miller doubled to right center to score the runner from first base. The lead was extended to 3-0 in the fourth inning as the Bobcats connected on a two-run homer off UB starter Brandon Mumaw.
After four straight scoreless innings for UB, the Bobcats put the game away in the eighth inning as they added two more runs to make the score 5-0 in favor of the home team. The UB bats stayed cold in the ninth and Davidson improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Bulls were only able to record five hits for the second straight game as Ben Vey led the way going 2-for-3 with a walk. Sheppard and Vinny Mallaro each notched a hit while freshman Connor Regan earned his first career hit in the loss.
Making his first career start for the Bulls on the mound, Mumaw finished off his game going 7.0 innings while allowing three runs and striking out four batters. Davidson starting pitcher Durin O'Linger was impressive as he went 6.0 innings and allowed just three hits while whiffing two UB batters.
The Bulls will return to the diamond tomorrow at 10:00 am as they take on Marist in the final game of the Davidson Tournament.
