
Women’s Tennis Completes Solid Opening Weekend At Harvard Fall Classic

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team concluded their first set of fall matches this past weekend at the Harvard Fall Classic. This unbracketed event took place over three days of competition.
Matches got underway on Friday as the Bulls picked up a pair of singles victories. Sophomore Pia Schwarz came away with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Racquel Lyn of Dartmouth and newcomer Azra Deniz Comlek defeated Emily Zhou, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. In doubles action, Comlek and senior Emel Abibula defeated Dartmouth's Jennifer Gadalov and Boston University's Lily O'Fagan, 6-3.
Saturday's action saw the Bulls play opponents from Harvard and Boston College with Buffalo winning seven of the eight contests in singles. Schwarz defeated Yufei Long of Boston College, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-5, while junior Gabriella Akopyan won her match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 over BC's Maria Ross. Comlek won her second match in as many days with a 5-7, 7-6 (3), 12-10 victory over Reagan Posorske.
The rest of the Bulls played opponents from Harvard as Abibula defeated Chelsea Williams, 6-3, 6-1, and sophomore Hsin-Yuan Shih defeated Kayla Leschly, 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. Freshman Lolina Schietekat Sedas won defeating Lauryn Wu, 6-1, 6-2, and Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou also won her match over Anna Li.
UB picked up a pair of doubles victories on Saturday with Akopyan and Antoniou-Karademitrou defeating Ross and Marion Conklin of BC, 6-4, while Schietekat Sedas and Shih defeated Wu and Leschly of Harvard, 7-6 (4).
Buffalo closed out the weekend on Sunday with singles and doubles matches against Rhode Island. The Bulls swept the three doubles contests and won five of seven matches in singles. Schwarz and freshman Ambre Amat scored a 7-5 victory at first doubles, while Antoniou-Karademitrou and Akopyan won easily, 6-1, at two. Abibula and Schietekat Sedas won at third doubles, 6-3.
In singles, Akopyan won in straight sets over Rachel Smilansky, 6-4, 6-3, while Abibula won 6-2, 6-0 against Nadia Rajan. Comlek completed a perfect 3-0 week in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Paulina Loredo and Shih defeated Halah Davis, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Sedas Schietekat won her final match over Sydney Chratian, 7-5, 6-3.
The Bulls will be back in action this Saturday when they play the first matches on the new UB Tennis Courts right next to the Murchie Family Fieldhouse. UB will face Niagara and Carnegie Mellon.
