ST. LOUIS, MO – The NCAA Wrestling Championships began on Thursday and both UB grapplers, Michael Petite (157) and Sam Schuyler (285) advanced to day two of action. Both dropped their opener bouts, but were able to rebound to win their first consolation matches.
Petite advanced to Friday following a decisive 7-2 decision over 15th-seed Chase Saldate of Michigan State in his first consolation match. Petite rebounded from giving up an early takedown and never looked back. He had an escape and a takedown to close out the first period with a 3-2 lead. Petite added an escape and a takedown in the second period before earning the riding time point after the third and the 7-2 victory.
Petite had a tough draw out of the gate, as he faced two-seed and three-time All-American Hayden Hidlay of NC State in his first match. The redshirt-sophomore dropped a 14-5 major decision.
Schuyler faced 23rd-seed Michael McAleavey of the Citadel in his first consolation match. After a scoreless first period, Schuyler earned an escape to take a 1-0 lead after the second. McAleavey answered with an escape to start the third and the match remained knotted 1-1 and went to overtime. Not long into the overtime, Schuyler was able to register a takedown to earn the 3-1 sudden victory.
Schuyler tangled with seventh-seeded Ethan Laird of Rider in his first bout. The match was tight throughout. Schuyler got on the board first with an escape to start the second period. Laird tied it up with an escape to start the third. Laird recorded a takedown with less than a minute to go in the match. Schuyler was able to get the escape, but ran out of time and lost in a 3-2 decision.
"We wrestled well today," head coach John Stutzman said. "Now the fun begins. I'm excited about getting two guys through to day two where they both beat higher seeds."
Petite will start off with Stanford's Requir van der Merwe, the 17th seed, when wrestling resumes tomorrow. Schuyler will face eight-seed Jordan Wood of Lehigh.
