HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell 53-39 to Marshall in the regular season opener at the Cam Henderson Center on Monday night.
Senior guard Anaya Coleman led the Bulls with 10 points, Paula Lopez scored seven and Ally Carman added six points.
Carman established an early inside presence scoring on a pair of layups on the block, but the hosts were aggressive on the glass and turned second chance opportunities into a 10-5 lead at the first media timeout. Marshall then used a 16-0 run to take a 22-7 lead at the end of the first.
The Bulls opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run courtesy of back-to-back buckets from Meg Lucas and Lopez. After a prolonged scoring drought for both teams, Aniya Rowe came up with a steal and scored in transition, but Marshall answered with a layup at the other end to maintain a 29-14 lead at the media timeout. Carman continued to be a menace on the glass as she skied up for an offensive rebound putback before Lucas took her defender off the bounce and knocked down a midrange jumper, but the Thundering Herd beat the buzzer with a layup to take a 31-18 lead at the half.
Coleman ended UB's drought from beyond the arc with a triple on the right wing before Gabby McDuffie got in the lane for a pull up jumper to pull UB within 11 at the 6:12 mark, but Marshall answered with a triple to take a 37-23 lead at the media timeout. The hosts then used an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 20 at the end of the third.
The Bulls found a spark as they opened the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run on a pair of runners in the lane by Lopez and a spot up jumper by Carman. McDuffie continued to do the dirty work as she converted on a second chance layup. Buffalo continued to fight as Diann Jackson hit Carman with a beautiful pass down the baseline for a corner three to cut the lead to 13 with two minutes to play, but that would be as close as they would get.
Buffalo found most of their offense inside, scoring 20 points in the paint, while adding 14 points off Marshall turnovers, but the hosts were able to capitalize in the points off turnovers category as well, scoring 16 points off UB's miscues.
Up next, Buffalo will return home to welcome SEC powerhouse and 24th ranked Kentucky to Alumni Arena on Sunday, November 9 at 2pm.
