
Bulls Earn Two Medals on Opening Day of MAC Outdoor Championships

ATHENS, OHIO – The University at Buffalo track and field program competed at day one of the 2025 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday. Matt Gensel and Jacob Brink headlined for the Bulls, earning two medals on the opening day of competition.
Gensel placed second in the men's 10,000-meter with a time of 31:37.44, earning the second MAC medal of his career. The junior has now earned a medal in the 10,000-meter for two consecutive years. Brink trailed Gensel with a time of 31:43.94 to take third. The time was a collegiate personal record for the junior, earning the first MAC medal of his career. Freshman Connor Domoy also earned a top five finish for the Bulls, taking fifth with a time of 32:34.79.
Kenneth Gulloso brought his best on day one of the conference championships, setting a new personal record in the hammer throw of 57.68 meters. Gulloso took fifth in the event with the mark and rose to fifth all-time on the UB outdoor leaderboard.
Loretta White competed in the women's hammer throw, setting a new personal record of 49.53 meters. The sophomore surpassed her previous best in the event of 49.44 meters, taking 10th of 20 competitors. Freshman Faith Hamilton also competed for the Bulls (19th, 41.70m).
Linnea Neureuther qualified for Saturday's 400-meter hurdles finals, posting a time of 1:01.17 in the preliminary round to place fifth in the field of 22 student-athletes. The freshman fell just shy of her personal best mark of 1:01.14, a time that ranks fifth in UB outdoor history. Gemma Galligani also competed for the Bulls, placing 13th with a time of 1:03.40. On the men's side, Jason Colindres placed 10th with a time of 57.81.
Rylee VanAlstine (11th, 21.78) and Sam Mellinger (13th, 21.94) competed in the men's 200-meter dash. On the women's side, Sophia Sampson placed 19th with a time of 24.98. The top eight student-athletes from each event qualified for Saturday's finals.
Stella Kapp set a new personal record in the women's javelin throw with a mark of 35.47 meters. The freshman placed 12th.
MEN'S DECATHLON
Kevin Gabalski sits in fourth in the men's decathlon after day one. The senior began by placing third in the 100-meter with a time of 11.17 seconds. Gabalski then posted a season-best mark in the long jump (6.66m) to finish third in the event, and a personal best throw of 12.66 meters in the shot put to take first place. The senior ended day one by posting a season-best mark of 1.84 meters in the high jump to place third and finish fourth in the 400-meter with a personal best time of 50.58 seconds.
The men's decathlon will wrap up on Friday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter.
WOMEN'S HEPTATHLON
In the women's heptathlon, Isa van Puffelen is in sixth place headed into day two, with Krista Perry in eighth.
van Puffelen opened day one for the Bulls with a new personal best time of 14.92 in the 100-meter hurdles to place seventh. The freshman was then just shy of her personal record high jump (1.63m) with a mark of 1.61 meters to place fourth. van Puffelen closed day one by placing seventh in the shot put (10.06m) and seventh in the 200-meter with a time of 26.46.
Perry began the heptathlon with a time of 15.08 to take eighth in the 100-meter hurdles. The freshman then finished seventh in the high jump (1.52m) and third in shot put with a personal record throw of 11.72 meters. Perry finished day one with a time of 26.77 to place ninth in the 200-meter dash.
