JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University at Buffalo track and field program had three student-athletes qualify for NCAA East First Rounds, competing for their chance to advance to NCAA Championships this past Friday and Saturday.
Zahra Amos did just that, becoming the first athlete in women's program history since Shelly Hamilton in 1998 to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the high jump. Amos finished 11th in the event with a new personal record mark of 1.79 meters, rising to third in UB outdoor history. The senior cleared the 1.79 meter mark on her first attempt. Amos will be the first student-athlete to represent the women's program at NCAA Championships since Shante' White in 2013.
Amos will next compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The high jump is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th at 5:30 p.m PST.
Freshman Akuot Kuany also competed for the Bulls in the high jump, placing 17th with a jump of 1.74 meters. Kuany cleared the mark on her first attempt but failed to reach the NCAA Championships qualifying mark of 1.79 meters. Kuany was the first freshman in women's program history since Kristy Woods in 2009 to compete at NCAA East First Rounds.
Aiden Walker competed in the men's discus throw on Friday afternoon, finishing the event with a mark of 53.23 meters. Walker placed 22nd of 43 student-athletes, missing the NCAA Championship qualifying mark of 56.70 meters. The top 12 athletes advanced to the finals. Walker was the first Buffalo thrower to compete at NCAA East First Rounds in the discus throw since Matt Gac in 2011.
