AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped the series opener at Akron 6-5 in blustery conditions at Lee R. Jackson Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulls got on the board first as Alexis Lucyshyn led off the top of the second with an infield single and Alexis Matheney followed with a walk before Olivia Kincanon lined a two-RBI single to right to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.
The Zips tied the game in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a hit and a UB throwing error, but the Bulls continued to attack at the plate in the top of the fifth as Anna Aguon smacked a leadoff double off the wall in deep center field and Rachel Steffan followed with an RBI single to right to score Aguon and give the Bulls a 3-2 lead.
After the Zips evened the score at three, the Bulls pulled ahead once again in the top of the sixth as Madison Fernimen led off the inning with a double to right and Kincanon followed with a two-run blast over the wall in left field to put UB up 5-3.
Akron answered in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs on five hits to take a 6-5 lead and that was all they needed as the Bulls were unable to plate a run and extend the game.
Buffalo concludes the series against the Zips with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
