AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games at Akron on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls fell 4-0 in game one before a late-game comeback came up short as UB dropped game two 13-9.
The Zips got on the board early in game one with a solo home run in the bottom of the second and would add three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead and that was all they needed as the Bulls were held to just three hits.
In game two, Akron got off to another quick start scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, but the Bulls answered in the top of the second as UB loaded the bases on singles by Alexis Lucyshyn and Brianna Castro and Madison Fernimen took advantage with a two-run single to cut the lead to two. Later, Ally Sobaszek recorded an RBI groundout and Kate Vara followed with a sac fly RBI to tie the game at four.
The Zips continued to stay hot at the plate as they added four runs on five hits to go up 8-4 would later extend their lead to eight through three innings of play.
The Buffalo bats came alive in the top of the fourth as Alexis Matheney drew a lead off walk and Castro and Fernimen followed with back-to-back doubles to cut the Akron lead to 12-6 and later, Anna Aguon singled to center field to pull the Bulls within five.
Lucyshyn gave the Bulls a spark in the fifth as she led off the inning with a solo home run to straightaway center field to cut the lead to 12-8 and Olivia Kincanon added a solo shot of her own in the top of the seventh but that was as close as they came as the rally fell just short.
The Bulls return home to host Ball State in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at 1pm.
