BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team kicks off the 2021-22 campaign on Monday night at Wisconsin. It will be a tough test for the Bulls as the Badgers are ranked 23rd in the country and have five wrestlers in the national rankings.
Though still young, the Bulls return starters at nearly every weight class, led by two-time national qualifier Derek Spann. After bulking up to 141 a season ago, Spann is back to 133 – a weight class in which he qualified for the 2019 and 2020 NCAA Championships. Spann is 22nd in the preseason national rankings.
Sophomore Tristan Daugherty returns at 125. Last season, he went 7-5 overall and 5-2 in MAC duals in a solid freshman campaign.
Redshirt-senior Ben Freeman is back for his second season as a starter at 141. The Michigan transfer went 3-4 overall and 1-2 in MAC duals last year.
After missing last season, John Arceri returns to the lineup at 149. In 2019-20, the grad student went 9-10 in duals.
Returning NCAA qualifier Michael Petite returns at 157 after a solid run late last season. The redshirt-junior placed fourth at the MAC Championships to qualify for the NCAAs where he advanced to Day 2 of competition. Ty Raines will also challenge for the starting job at 157 after going 3-3 overall and 2-2 in duals at 149 last season.
Veteran Noah Grover and youngster Jay Nivison could each see time at 165. Grover is one of the most experienced wrestlers on the roster, appearing in 24 duals over his career. Nivison redshirted last season but did go 4-1 in exhibition matches.
Guiseppe Hoose is slated to start at 174 after starting last season at 184 as a true freshman. He went 2-5 a season ago but looks to be more productive at a more suitable weight.
Redshirt-sophomore Sam Mitchell and newcomer Eli Sherran will see time at 197. Mitchell went 3-4 in duals last season. Sherran is a freshman from Texas where he was a two-time state champion.
Toby Cahill is back at 285 where he split time as a starter last season. A redshirt-senior, Cahill went 5-2 overall and 2-2 in duals a season ago.
Monday's dual at Wisconsin is slated to start at 8 pm EST and will air on the BIG10+ App. Click here to watch.
