BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bulls won their first game on the newly installed turf at Nan Harvey Field on Sunday afternoon. The UB Bulls softball team (11-13, 3-2 MAC) took game one of the doubleheader, 3-0. In the second game, the Western Michigan Broncos (11-14, 1-4 MAC) took home the road victory, 1-0.
After a Mia Mitchell leadoff double to the right center fence, the Bulls looked to score first. The Broncos' pitching shut down the opportunity as the game remained scoreless after two innings. Western Michigan threatened in the top of the third with two runners on and just one out, but an Alexis Lucyshyn strikeout and groundout ended the inning.
The Bulls broke the scoring drought in the third inning as Lucyshyn helped herself at the plate when ripped a two-run home run off UB Stadium to give Buffalo the 2-0 lead. After a Mia Mitchell infield single, Tianna Williams hit a double to the right center wall to score Mitchell.
The three runs would be all the Bulls needed as they won the game, 3-0. Lucyshyn earned her fifth complete game shutout of the season. She finished with five strikeouts while allowing just four hits.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Buffalo's Julia Tarantino and Western Michigan's Kailey O'Connor. The game was scoreless through five innings as both pitchers combined for nine strikeouts, eight of which came from Tarantino.
After a lead off single in the sixth inning, the Broncos were in business. The Broncos utilized the sacrifice bunt to move the runner over to second. The next batter singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with one out. A fielders choice put the Broncos on the board.
The Bulls could only muster two hits on the afternoon each coming from Sara Kelly and Mitchell. Buffalo dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 1-0.
Tarantino went the distance and finished with five hits and one run allowed while striking out eight.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday when they host the Niagara Purple Eagles at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
