BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (12-3-2, 8-2-1 MAC) welcomes Western Michigan to UB Stadium for the regular season finale on Wednesday at 3pm. There's a lot at stake as the Bulls have a chance to claim a share of the regular season title and the #1 seed in next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament with a win.
It is the 34th meeting between Buffalo and Western Michigan, and a rematch of last year's MAC championship game, with the Broncos maintaining a narrow 14-12-7 series advantage.
The Bulls have officially clinched a spot in the 2025 Mid-American Conference Soccer Tournament. UB has advanced to the MAC tournament championship game twice in the last three seasons, with one of those trips resulting in a MAC championship title in 2022. UB's first MAC championship win came in 2014, the first season under head coach Shawn Burke.
Buffalo scored two goals in the final five minutes of play to secure a big 3-1 road victory over Toledo at Paul Hotmer Field on Sunday. Sophomore Carolyn Hinkle scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute for her first goal of the season while freshman Maddy Murphy recorded her first career goal a few minutes later. Graduate student forward Jasmine Guerber rounded out the scoring for UB, tallying her seventh goal of the season in the first half.
The Bulls are balanced offensively, with 30 goals scored off the feet of 12 different players, led by Guerber who leads the team in goals (7) and points (19) and junior midfielder Laiken Kiser who has notched five goals. Junior Lexie Thompson leads the Bulls between the pipes, compiling an 12-3-2 overall record. She leads the MAC and ranks 15th nationally in goals against average (.60) while ranking second in the league in shutouts (8) and third in save percentage (.833) across 17 contests.
As a team, the Bulls lead the MAC and ranks 13th in the nation in goals against average (.59) while also leading the league and ranking in the top 25 nationally in shutout percentage (.529). Offensively, the Bulls lead the league in shots per game (14.1), shots on goal (7.4) per game while ranking second in the MAC in points (86), goals (30), assists (26) and scoring offense (1.76) and third in corner kicks per game (5.2).
Western Michigan is 13-3-1 overall and 9-1-1 in league play after defeating Central Michigan 3-1 to clinch a share of the regular season title on Sunday. The Broncos are led offensively by Avery Peters and Abby Smothers who have recorded six goals each and Drew Martin who has notched five goals and a league-best 12 assists on the year. Reagan Sulaver leads WMU between the pipes, as she owns a 0.66 goals against average and .810 save percentage with 47 saves in 17 starts this season. As a team, the Broncos lead the league and rank in the top 30 nationally in goals (37), assists (41) and points (115).
Up next, Buffalo will await the results from around the league to determine their seed for the MAC Tournament at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The quarterfinal round begins on Saturday, November 1 with the top two seeds receiving a bye to the semifinals on Tuesday, November 4.
