Bulls' Sprinters Chase Personal Records at Akron’s Northeast Ohio Open

AKRON, OHIO – The University at Buffalo track and field program sent select student-athletes from its sprinting program to the University of Akron on Friday to compete in the Northeast Ohio Open. The Bulls utilized the regional meet to chase their personal records and prepare for next week's Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.
Four Bulls began the afternoon meet by competing in the 400-meter. On the women's side, Johanna Kleiner set a new personal record in the event with a time of 57.84, surpassing her previous best of 58.01 seconds set earlier in the season at the UCF Knight Invite. The senior was under two seconds shy of reaching the all-time UB top 10 for the event (56.25). Stephney Pryce also competed for the Bulls, finishing with a time of 58.15 seconds, just two tenths of a second shy of her season best (58.01). Fernando Sanchez competed in the men's 400-meter, finishing with a time of 50.10 seconds. The senior was less than two seconds shy of his personal record in the event (48.57).
In the women's 100-meter, freshman Hailey Martinez finished with a new personal best time of 12.11 seconds. Martinez beat her previous best of 12.16 seconds, falling within one tenth of a second shy of the all-time UB top 10 for the event (12.03). On the men's side, Sam Mellinger posted a time of 10.91 seconds, falling shy of his previous best of 10.76 seconds, the fastest 100-meter on the men's roster this season.
Mellinger also competed in the men's 200-meter dash. The freshman finished the event with a time of 22.38 seconds. Mellinger's season-best time of 22.02 ranks second on the men's roster. Shannon Schmieder competed on the women's side, placing fifth with a time of 25.50. The freshman was nearly half a second shy of her record in the event (24.99).

The Bulls will next compete at MAC Outdoor Championships. The conference championships will be held in Athens, Ohio, from Thursday, May 15th through Saturday, May 17th. All information regarding MAC Outdoor Championships can be found here.
