ITHACA, NY – Senior forward Jasmine Guerber found the back of the net in the 79th minute to lead the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-0-1) to a 1-1 draw with Cornell at Berman Field on Thursday night.
Buffalo controlled the pace for much of the first 10 minutes and were rewarded with a pair of shots, but the attempts from Kelly Severini and Guerber were turned away by the Big Red defense.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lexie Thompson was tested for the first time on a shot in the 16th minute, but she made the save and then a couple minutes later, a Cornell attacker got behind the UB backline and ripped a shot from point blank range, but Thompson made a fantastic diving save.
Cornell then had a pair of looks midway through the half that were turned away by UB backline, but the Big Red would break through in the 34th minute off a misplayed 50/50 ball, as they made a run and Maddie LeRoy fired a shot across the box past a diving Thompson into the bottom left corner of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Bulls got things going offensively early in the second half as Severini got a shot off in the 55th minute, but Natalie Medugno was there for her first save of the night. Buffalo continued to press as Arianna Zumpano broke free and fired on net and then later, Eva Blatz had a similar look, but both attempts were saved by Medugno.
The Bulls finally broke through in the 79th minute as Ellie Simmons took the corner kick and played a beautiful ball that curled on target where it got knocked around before Guerber got her foot on it and one-timed it into the back of the net for her second goal in as many games to tie the game.
UB had one last chance in the final seconds as Simmons took another corner and played it to the top of the box where Blatz got her head on it, but it sailed off target and the game would end in a draw.
The overall shot total was even on the night with the teams recording 12 shots each, while Buffalo held a 4-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson finished with five saves on the night while Medugno made three stops for Cornell. Junior midfielder Sarah Woods was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"I think we learned real quick what happens when you don't bring a champion's mindset to a game," said head coach Shawn Burke. "To the players credit, they fought back and earned a hard point on the road. We'll learn and hopefully be better next time out."
Up next, Buffalo will return to UB Stadium for a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, September 4 as they host crosstown rival Canisius at 7pm.
