BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 MAC) will travel to Milwaukee, Wisc. for the Marquette Invite. The Bulls will face fierce competition in the #25 Dayton Flyers, Marquette Golden Eagles and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers . The Golden Eagles and Hilltoppers aren't too far behind the Flyers in the AVCA Top-25 poll as they both received votes in the most recent poll.
The Bulls started the season with their annual Buffalo Invite where they hosted Liberty, Marist and Rutgers. On their home court in Alumni Arena, UB earned victories over Marist and Rutgers. The Bulls' win over Rutgers marked the program's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2017. The win also gave Head Coach Scott Smith his 90th career win at Buffalo. He's just the third coach at UB to reach this milestone. Preseason All-MAC honoree Manoela Forlin and freshman setter earned Buffalo Invite All-Tournament Team recognition. Forlin and freshman Sydney Bell led the Bulls on the attack as they were the only Bulls to have 10+ kills in each match.
After her great weekend, Forlin is averaging a team-best 4.42 points per set which is sixth in the MAC and 104th in the NCAA. She had a career-high five aces against the Marist Red Foxes.
Mitchell helped the Bulls to the top spot in the conference in assists per set. The Bulls are currently averaging 12.83 assists per set, which is 47th in the country. This has led to the Bulls having the best hitting percentage in the MAC at .296, good for 31st in the nation.
The Bulls will open the weekend against the nationally ranked Dayton Flyers on Friday, Sept. 5th at 5 p.m. ET. The Flyers are 2-1 on the season with wins over Lafayette and Washington State. This will mark the third consecutive season the Bulls will play a ranked opponent. In 2023, UB faced #16 Arkansas while they played #3 Pitt, #20 Miami (FL) and #16 Florida last season. This will be the third meeting between the Bulls and Flyers with the first meeting coming in 1993. The Flyers won both contests with the most recent coming in 2011.
On Saturday, Sept. 6th at 1 p.m. ET the Bulls will play the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Hilltoppers open the season with a 2-1 record with victories against Wright State and Loyola Chicago. The Bulls and Hilltoppers only have one all-time meeting which came in the 1996 season. The Hilltoppers enter the weekend with a .290 hitting percentage that ranks 36th in the NCAA, just five spots behind the Bulls' .296.
The Bulls will close the weekend out with a match against host Marquette on Sunday, Sept. 7th. The Golden Eagles went 2-1 last weekend at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. They defeated host Hawaii in front of a crowd of over 5,800. They closed the weekend with a win over Utah State. Marquette has the 18th most blocks in the country with 37. This will be the first meeting between the Bulls and Golden Eagles.
